BIO
Nick Costa is set to release When The Lights Go Out, his most personal and ambitious album to date, a project ignited by a life-altering experience in early 2023. After suffering what his doctors called a "mini-stroke," Costa felt a newfound urgency to complete a collection of songs he had been nurturing for years. "It lit a fire under me," he shares, reflecting on how the experience compelled him not only to finish older material but also to dive deep into his creative well and write new songs that encapsulate his evolving perspective.
The album intricately weaves themes of mortality, love, and gratitude, exploring the delicate balance between the fragility of life and the beauty of everyday experiences. "It's about being thankful for what we experience right now, whether it's positive or negative," Costa explains, emphasizing the importance of living in the moment. With the addition of lush orchestral arrangements by Trevor Woggin, the record takes on a cinematic quality, enhancing the emotional weight of each song. Costa’s live-tracked performances, alongside powerhouse drummer JT Bates (Taylor Swift, Ed Sheeran, Bonny Light Horseman) and acclaimed bassist Cat Popper (Willie Nelson, Levon Helm, Jack White), bring a raw, organic feel that complements the orchestral backdrop.
Inspired by a diverse range of artists—from Gillian Welch’s Time (The Revelator) to the unique concept of “Randy Newman doing Willie Nelson covers”—Costa’s latest work marks a bold departure from his previous albums. "It's the strongest record I've done by a mile," he states, underscoring the growth and experimentation that characterize this release.
In addition to the album, fans who preorder through his crowdfunding campaign will have the opportunity to access a digital special edition filled with exclusive content, test presses, and much more. This includes early demos, alternate takes, and b-sides, offering listeners a behind-the-scenes glimpse into his creative process. "I almost released the demos as their own album," Costa notes, reflecting on how these earlier versions differ from the final product. "They're VERY different, but still great."
With this new album, Nick Costa invites listeners on a deeply personal journey, blending heartfelt storytelling with rich musical arrangements that promise to resonate long after the final note fades.
Nick is available to hire for commercial and studio work, as well as songwriting and live performance.
